Psalm 11 - Overcoming Fear by Faith

Psalm 11 - Overcoming Fear by Faith

Psalm 11 was written by David (while in the Saul's court) while fleeing from Saul. How we pray is an indicator of how we'll live. There are five Hebrew words for faith: (1) Amen means to lean on like a staff (Gen 15:6); (2) Batach means to body-slam like a wrestler (Psa 55:22-23, 1Pe 5:7); (3) Casah means to flee for refuge (Psa 11:1, Psa 57:1, Heb 6:18); (4) Yachal means to apply a field dressing to a wound (Job 13:15, Lam 3:21); (5) Qawah means to wait with endurance and tenacity (Isa 40:31, Lam 3:25, Rom 8:28). David's attitude is revealed and indicates his action. Background to Psalm 11 (1Sa 26:20, Psa 55:6). The mountains were thought to provide protection, security (Son 2:14, Gen 19:17). David compares himself to birds (Psa 103:5, Psa 102:6, Psa 84:3, Psa 102:7, 1Sa 26:20, Psa 55:6). Rationale of the weak is trying to get David to flee (Psa 11:1-3). David expresses his trust in God. The providential care of the Lord to us is illustrated by the Lord (Joh 10:27-29). David understood that no one can touch him but that the Lord allows (Psa 11:4-7, Psa 56:11, Heb 4:16). God's ever-present Justice weighs the situation (Psa 11:4-7, Jer 17:10). (1) Man's extremity is God's opportunity; (2) Because every believer has God's Righteousness, we never cease to be accepted (Rom 4:3, Rom 8:9, Eph 1:6); (3) God has recorded our days and numbered the hairs on our head (Psa 23:6, Psa 37:18, Psa 39:4, Mat 10:30); (4) In every circumstance we need to take refuge in the finished work of Christ our rock (Joh 10:27-29; Joh 19:30, Psa 62:2-7).
