Learn to Discern

Satan uses every angle to include good. "But I fear, lest somehow, as the serpent deceived Eve by his craftiness, so your minds may be corrupted from the simplicity that is in Christ." (2Co 11:3) Did Christ die for evil? Christ died to pay the penalty for our sins, but He delivers us from evil. Adam chose evil and sin entered the world. Good and evil in Hebrew is very close -- colos and cacas (Heb 5:14). To be simple is not a simple thing. In Greek, hagnotes (simplicity) = haplotes (purity). Why does God permit evil? Because freedom demands a choice. There are things going on in the soul that only the Word of God (aka. the "Sword") can expose (Heb 4:12). We all have inclinations in us that cause us to think do or say evil. The minute you become a detector of evil you've succumbed to its clutches (Jam 3:1, Jam 3:13-17). Evil always has the desire of self promotion. Envy is one of the most murderous. God will render to every man according to his deeds and we reap what we sow (Rom 2:6, Gal 6:7-9, Hos 8:1-14). Exodus generation rebelled; the spys gave "an bad/evil report" (Num 13:27-33, Deu 1:29-39). An evil generation died in the wilderness (Deu 1:35). If you pursue God the blessings of God will pursue you -- "overtake you" (Deu 28:1-9). If not you'll be cursed "because you have forsaken Me" (Deu 28:15-20). "God gives Grace to the humble but wages war on the proud" (Jos 24:14-18, Jdg 2:1-23, 1Pe 5:5).

Learn to Discern

Gene Cunningham - June 9, 2012

Learn to Discern

Dorothy Sayers said "God cannot exact from man anything more than He did from Himself." We are to discern evil, so we can defend ourself and overcome. We are called to a Christian Knighthood (1Pe 3:8-12). We can differ and argue doctrine, but it's important to be gracious. Peter emphasizes the cross (1Pe 1:17-21) and Jesus death, burial, and resurrection (1Pe 2:21-24, 1Pe 3:17-18, 1Pe 4:1-2, 2Co 5:14-15). God chose Christ (Isa 42:1). Our choice to trust the Son is free. 1Pe 3:10-12 Seek and pursue peace ("with God" Rom 5:1; "from God" Gal 5:22; "of God" Phi 4:6-7)
