Sanctification 1

Romans 8 - Sanctification - Tecumseh Kansas 2009

. Theme for the Book of Romans (Rom 1:16-17), "the power of the gospel"; bookends "Obedience to the faith" (Rom 1:5, Rom 16:26). Condemnation (Romans 1-3); Justification (Romans 4-5); Sanctification (Romans 6-8); Dispensation (Romans 9-11); Transformation (Romans 12-16). Three divisions in chapter 8: (1) Past work of the Spirit — no condemnation — we're saints (Rom 8:1-11); (2) Present work of the Spirit — no dominion — the Spirit's work to sanctification (Rom 8:12-27); (3) Future work - no defeat — we're holy (Rom 8:28-39). The will of God is our sanctification (1Th 4:7). Freedom is among Paul's favorite words (Rom 8:1, Rom 8:21, Rom 6:4-6, Rom 6:18, Rom 6:22, Rom 7:6, Rom 8:2). The Law of Sin and Death - sin brings death. Law of the Spirit in Christ Jesus is the newness of life (Eph 4:23-24). Sin must be judged and perfect obedience is necessary. Sanctification is a cooperative process. The purpose is that we walk worthy (Eph 2:8-10, Eph 4:1).
