“God loves the world in this way. He gave His only Son that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life.”
There are those who will tell you that “the world” only meant the world of those that God chose to believe. Is that what the original recipients of that verse would have understood it to mean?
1st John 2:2, “He [Jesus Christ] is the propitiation for our sins and not for our sins only, but for the sins of the entire world.” He uses the word ὅλος. As we would say, “every bit; the whole thing; nothing excluded.” But there are people all across this country who will teach you that the word “world” there doesn’t mean world. It just means those that God chose to believe. The problem is, are we understanding it the way the recipients of the letter understood it? Because the author was writing to them in their language, their culture, and their context that are perfectly clear. They don’t make sense to us at all.
