Colossians 2:6–7, “As you therefore have received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in Him, rooted and built up in Him, and established in the faith, as you have been taught, abounding in it with thanksgiving.” In these two verses, we not only find out what the Christian life is all about, we find out how to carry it out. Notice the “as” and the “so.” “As you…” received Christ, “so walk in Him.” How did you receive Jesus Christ? By grace through faith. If you received Jesus Christ, and God gave you eternal life and took away all your sins and imputed you with the righteousness of Christ, and planted God the Holy Spirit within you in a single moment of time, how do you think He wants you to walk? By grace through faith.
The word “received” is active, and it actually means “to receive and embrace.” It’s like when we receive the Savior Who died on the cross for us, we’re hanging on to Him, and “walk” is used to illustrate the Christian life. And if you think about it, when Jesus called His disciples and He said, “Come and follow Me,” they got up and started walking. How do we walk “by grace through faith?” Four things are listed in this passage.
- The word “rooted” is speaking of your salvation. It’s in the perfect tense, which refers to something that happened in the past with ongoing results. Somewhere in the past, you trusted Jesus Christ as your Savior. You were made a new creature in Christ and that is going to remain true forever.
- Then he says, “built up.” The word “build” means “to build a house.” Believe it or not, this is in the passive voice. You can’t build this house. But taking the Word of God into your soul, where God the Holy Spirit dwells, He is the builder. You just gave Him the building materials. You take the Word of God, and God, the Holy Spirit takes it and He begins building on that foundation.
- So once you’re “rooted and built up,” you become “established.” The word “establish” is a word that means firm, solid, and secure. It’s a word that talks about coming to a level of spiritual growth where you are able to stand on your own. Once again, it’s in the passive voice. You can’t do it. The Holy Spirit has to do it.
- Then we come to the word “abounding” which means “to overflow.” God wants your life abounding. And you know the interesting thing about this? Being “rooted” is something you can’t do. Being “built up” is something you can’t do. Being “established” is something you can’t do, but “abounding” is something you have to do. It’s in the active voice. Why is that? We’re the one who has to decide to overflow. Lift someone. Comfort someone. Encourage someone.
Are you going to abound and enrich someone else’s life? “As you received Christ, so walk in Him” — a very simple, very powerful passage.
