In 606 B.C., the prophet Jeremiah, on the very eve of the Babylonian captivity, spoke to Jerusalem. The ancient tradition tells us that as the Babylonians were chaing the young people — Daniel and his friends. While they took the nobles (i.e., the young men) and were chaining them neck and neck to go on the death march to Babylon, Jeremiah was preaching to them. You know what he preached to them? The book of Lamentations.
The Book of Lamentations is a message. And you’ll remember in chapter three he cries out in his anguish, “How could God allow this to happen to His people?” And then at last, he comes to the point where he says, “This I recall to my mind, therefore I have hope. Through the Lord’s mercies we are not consumed, because His compassions fail not. They are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness.” Lamentation 3:22-23. That was the message that those young men, Daniel, his friends and others carried in their heart as they marched as slaves across to Babylon. And then interestingly, by the grace of God, they went from being slaves to being the rulers in the kingdom. That’s what God can do!
Never doubt what God can do. Never judge what He’s doing based on how things look. “His mercies never fail. They are new every morning.” Never allow darkness and difficulty to blind you. To the fact that the light is coming. “The entrance of your words gives light. It gives understanding to the simple.” Psalm 119:130.
God is light. He will guide you. He will illumine you. If you trust the message of God, you turn to him with all your heart. He will always lead you into the light. “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” Psalm chapter 119:105. And the light is where we want to be living our lives. “But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ His son cleanses us from all sin.” 1st John 1:7
“His mercies never fail. They are new every morning.” I don’t know how things are going to turn out. I don’t know what’s going to happen tomorrow. I’m not a prophet, but I can tell you this with absolute certainty. What Lord did promise us was if we trusted Him, we would have no need to fear. “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct your paths.” Proverbs 3:5-6. If you trust in the Lord, you’re going to be fine. And that’s very, very important.
