God holds men accountable. As Paul tells us in Romans chapter one, “because they knew God and they glorified Him not as God, neither were they thankful.” It says, “because what may be known of both is manifest in them, for God has shown it to them. For since the creation of the world, His invisible attributes are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even His eternal power and Godhead, so that they are without excuse.” No one will ever have an excuse for not coming to a saving knowledge of Christ. Every humble soul will come to faith in Jesus Christ.

There are only two attitudes possible for the human soul. One is arrogance. One is humility. Peter tells us that, “God resists the proud but gives grace to the humble. Therefore, humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you in due time.” So when someone hears the gospel, or reads the Scripture and hardens their heart. What is their problem? Their problem is they won’t humble themselves. Jesus began the Beatitudes in Matthew 5:3 by saying, “Blessed are the poor in spirit…” What is being poor in spirit? Being humble. It’s humbling ourselves before the God of the universe, Who created us, Who loved us, and Who sent His Son to go to the cross and die in our behalf.

All unbelief, all rebellion against truth is always rooted in arrogance. The Scripture tells us in James 4:10, “Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he will lift you up.” Humility recognizes our weakness and inadequacy, and therefore the need that we have for our God to deliver us. So humility always leads ultimately to faith. The wicked, of course, reject truth and rebel. The ultimate sin is unbelief.

This may shock you. No one will go to hell for their sins. And why is that? Because Jesus Christ paid the debt. He died for the sins of every member of the human race, past, present, and future. And what does John tell us in John 3:16? “For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have everlasting life.” And we all know that verse, but we need to go on to verse 17-18. “God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved. He who believes in him is not condemned, but he who does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.“

“The unforgivable sin” is unbelief. A person who continues in unbelief to the point of death has no hope of forgiveness. “For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have everlasting life.“
