2nd Peter – Precious Promises, Perilous Times – 2009 – Northern Virginia
The theme of 2nd Peter is the great need for personal spiritual growth in a time when false teachers and teachings were infiltrating the early church (2Pe 1:5 with 2Pe 3:18). Key words/phrases relevant to spiritual growth are “grace and peace,” which can be “multiplied” as we grow in the “knowledge” of our Lord, and exercise due “diligence” in the practice of spiritual “love.” As a method of instruction, Peter emphasizes the necessity of reminder and repetition (2Pe 1:12-13, 2Pe 1:15, 2Pe 3:1-2).

Paul's prayer in Eph 1:15-23 is that we might learn the implications of the fact that believers are united to Jesus Christ forever. Eph 1:15 faith works itself out in love for other believers. He prays for enlightenment: understanding in Christ -- He is the supreme ruler of the universe and we're related to Him. Paul was severely attacked and persecuted and defends himself by amplifying his "weakness" in 2Co 11:22-33. In 2Co 12:7-9, "that the power of Christ may rest upon me" carries the theme of Eph 1:15-23. 1Pe 4:12-14 Peter presents similar attitude about suffering -- exceeding joy while demonstrating the power of Christ. Eph 1:19 says we possess Christ's power (he uses 4 Greek words for power). Eph 1:23 "His body -- the fullness of Him" sets up the bride and marriage discussion in future chapters.
More than any book Ephesians reveals the blessings from God based on our relationship with Jesus Christ by grace through faith. Eph 1:3 is the a key verse. Other key verses by chapter include Eph 2:8 Eph 3:19 Eph 4:1 Eph 5:18 and Eph 6:10-11.
