First and Second Peter are grouped in what are called the General Epistles, written to the Church at large. The theme of First Peter is the refining and growth potential in our sufferings, 1Pe 1:3, 1Pe 1:6; 1Pe 2:2. This epistle was written to believers scattered by persecution throughout Asia Minor (1 Pe 1:1). The date was circa 64-65 A.D.—the beginning of Nero’s persecutions. First Peter is the best known and loved of these epistles, called by E.J. Goodspeed, “One of the most moving pieces of persecution literature.” This epistle is written to suffering believers, and is styled by Isaac Walton as, “affectionate, loving, lowly, and humble.” This epistle conveys an intense expectation of the Lord’s return as seen in 1Pe 1:5, 1Pe 1:7, 1Pe 1:13, 1Pe 2:12, 1Pe 4:13, 1Pe 4:17, 1Pe 5:1, 1Pe 5:4.

Ephesians #42

Ephesians #42

The filling of the spirit in Eph 5:18 is based on the five works of the spirit at salvation -- baptism, regeneration, indwelling, gift, and sealed (see previous lessons). Indwelling of the spirit is to make us like Jesus. 1Ti 3:16 "godliness" means likeness to Christ . 2Co 3:18 "transformed from glory to glory"; we look in a mirror and make adjustments as example to our growth in Christ, looking more and more like Him. 2Ti 3:16 - the Word of God is... "profitable for rebuke, correction, and instruction in righteousness". Self-emptying is in the concept of filling by the Spirit (Rom 12:1-2). Effects of the Spirit: (1) personal self control (not squandering resources and excess) (Gal 5:23, Tit 1:8, 2Pe 1:6); (2) concern and caring for well being of others (Eph 5:19, 1Th 5:11); (3) inner joy under girds everything; (4) gratitude and thanksgiving (Eph 5:20, 1Th 5:16-18); (5) submissiveness (Eph 5:21, Pro 9:10)
