First and Second Peter are grouped in what are called the General Epistles, written to the Church at large. The theme of First Peter is the refining and growth potential in our sufferings, 1Pe 1:3, 1Pe 1:6; 1Pe 2:2. This epistle was written to believers scattered by persecution throughout Asia Minor (1 Pe 1:1). The date was circa 64-65 A.D.—the beginning of Nero’s persecutions. First Peter is the best known and loved of these epistles, called by E.J. Goodspeed, “One of the most moving pieces of persecution literature.” This epistle is written to suffering believers, and is styled by Isaac Walton as, “affectionate, loving, lowly, and humble.” This epistle conveys an intense expectation of the Lord’s return as seen in 1Pe 1:5, 1Pe 1:7, 1Pe 1:13, 1Pe 2:12, 1Pe 4:13, 1Pe 4:17, 1Pe 5:1, 1Pe 5:4.

Ephesians #36

Ephesians #36

Walking worthy means walking in Love and light, exposing the darkness (Eph 5:8-14). "Walk circumspectly" means to "walk carefully in wisdom -- to live life God's way" (Eph 5:15-17). Redeeming the time mean living each moment in the light of eternity -- investing today to receive the profit in eternity (Eph 5:16). Illustration of filling by the Spirit in John 2:1-11: there was a conscious need and request (Joh 2:3), then a command (His word) and response of obedience (Joh 2:5-8), and a transformation (Joh 2:9-11). Religious leaders were not able to extinguish the light from Stephen (Acts 6:8-10). Filling related to church mission (Eph 1:22-23); filling related to individual believer characteristic (Eph 3:19-22); filling related to spiritual growth (Eph 4:19). "Filling" in Eph 5:18 refers to control, possession, quality, and filling a need. Our life will have 3 results: harmonious relations, a deep inner joy, and thankfulness.
