First and Second Peter are grouped in what are called the General Epistles, written to the Church at large. The theme of First Peter is the refining and growth potential in our sufferings, 1Pe 1:3, 1Pe 1:6; 1Pe 2:2. This epistle was written to believers scattered by persecution throughout Asia Minor (1 Pe 1:1). The date was circa 64-65 A.D.—the beginning of Nero’s persecutions. First Peter is the best known and loved of these epistles, called by E.J. Goodspeed, “One of the most moving pieces of persecution literature.” This epistle is written to suffering believers, and is styled by Isaac Walton as, “affectionate, loving, lowly, and humble.” This epistle conveys an intense expectation of the Lord’s return as seen in 1Pe 1:5, 1Pe 1:7, 1Pe 1:13, 1Pe 2:12, 1Pe 4:13, 1Pe 4:17, 1Pe 5:1, 1Pe 5:4.

Ephesians #35

Ephesians #35

We are to be a living exhibit of the mercies we have received (1Pe 2:9-17). The more sensitive you are about your spiritual life the more you are aware about how far you fall short (Eph 5:8).Good pursued apart from God is evil. We have Eternal Life (1Jo 5:12), but rebel against that truth. As children we are to "walk in love" (Eph 5:1-2). Unrighteousness doesn't inherit the kingdom of God -- "sinners" don't have a chance (1Co 6:9-11). The saved or saints or children -- "you" -- and unsaved sinners -- "them" are contrasts (Eph 5:3-4). Sinners don't have an "inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God" (Eph 5:5). Wrath is coming upon the sons of disobedience (Eph 5:6). Our walk effects us now -- "the kingdom of God is righteous, peace, and joy in the Holy Spirit" (Rom 14:17). The operational "death" of fellowship and abundant life (Rom 8:12-17). Our inheritance by birth is in heaven in safe keeping (1Pe 1:4 ). "Child of God" = "heir of God". "Co-sufferer with Christ" = "heir with Christ" (Rom 8:17, 2Ti 2:11-12)
