This study was presented in the August 2013 Bible conference in Southern California.

Though Corinth was a “problem church” for Paul, how thankful we ought to be for them, for without their problems and questions, we would not have the answers and guidance provided in this wonderful letter. As with all the epistles, the challenge is to lay hold of the character of Christ. We are to be “transformed by the renewing of [our] minds” (Rom 12:2), and to “Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus” (Phi 2:5).

Key verses for this study:

  • “For I determined not to know anything among you except Jesus Christ and Him crucified.” 1Co 2:2 and
  • “Therefore purge out the old leaven, that you may be a new lump, since you are truly unleavened. For indeed Christ, our Passover, was sacrificed for us.” 1Co 5:7

Time To Endure 1

Everyone has need of endurance (Jam 5:11). Outline: (1) The "call" to endure; (2) Endurance Defined; (3) The Source and Supply; (4) The School of Endurance; (5) The Blessed Fruit of Endurance; (6) The Reward of Endurance; (7) Timeless Testimony of Endurance. In "We count them blessed" phrase, James uses is the same word used in the Sermon on the Mount (Mat 5:3-12). Each of us has our own race. "Endure" means literally "abide under" the pressure, circumstance or "abide under the shelter of the Almighty". When we are afflicted, we are more inclined to seek the shelter of the Lord. God had purpose in the suffering of Job and should mean something to us (Rom 15:4, 1Co 10:11). God's shield won't let anything by it, except what He allows. God conforms us to the image of His Son. Affliction adversity and suffering is worthy of deep evaluation  (Ecc 7:13-14, Ecc 7:8, Ecc 7:11). The reason is that God ordained the suffering. God causes all things to work together for good for those who love Him (Rom 8:28). Attitude (Pride or Humility) ⇒ Priority (Temporal or Spiritual) ⇒ Decision (Foolish or Wise) ⇒ Action (Wrong or Right) ⇒ Result (Cursing or Blessing)
