How many of you ever heard about an “evil eye?” Galatians 3:1, “Oh foolish Galatians, who has bewitched you?” “Bewitched” is the Greek word “baskainō.” It means “to place under a spell or cast the evil eye” on you. The evil eye is in envy. Proverbs 27:4 Solomon asked the question, “who is able to stand before envy?” Romans 1:29 says that those who are “full of envy” give rise to (you can read it) “murder, strife, deceit, evil-mindedness” down the line.
What was it that drove the highest of the created angels — the anointed cherub, the guardian of God's throne room — to begin a war against God? Well, he tells us, “I will make myself like the Most High.” Why does He get all this glory and I don't?
It was envy that moved the brothers of Joseph to seek to kill him, and then to sell him into slavery. It was envy that put Jesus on the cross. What did Pilot say? He knew that for envy the Pharisees had betrayed him. James 3:14-6. Beware of the sin of envy, because all of us are tempted to be envious.
So beware of the sin of envy.
