And he called His name Jesus. In obedience to God’s command (Matthew 1:21), Joseph gave Him the name
Jesus, which is the equivalent of the Hebrew name
Joshua.It means both
the Lord is salvation and
salvation is of the Lord. Here, at the beginning of Matthew’s Gospel, he makes clear that
whoever calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved(Acts 2:21; Rom. 10:13; Joel 2:32) and also that
there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved(Acts 4:12). It is important to see that Mary referred to Jesus as
God my Savior(Luke 1:47). In Roman Catholic teaching, Mary is said to be sinless. Here, she acknowledges her need of a Savior, just like all other men.
