There are three things that we should look for in any passage of Scripture: The Nature of God, The Knowledge of the World, and The Need of the Human Heart. The Nature of God -- Who is He? What is He like? What does He do? All of those things are a part of God's nature. The second thing is the world as we should know it.The world is an evil place. The world is a cruel place. It is a hurtful place. This world can grind you up and spit you out and cares absolutely nothing for you. God, on the other hand, sees each individual soul as having infinite value. Your value in the sight of God was expressed when Christ went to the cross. The penalty He paid on the cross tells each one of us what we are worth to God. And then the need of the human heart is “How do I bridge that gap between my alienation from God to a right relationship with Him?” Christ, of course, is the Bridge that closes that gap between man and God, because the nature of God tells us that He's a God of love. The world tells us why we need a God of love. 1st Timothy 2:5, “There is one God and one mediator between God and man, the man Christ Jesus.”
The word “believe” is used 98 times in the Gospel of John. There are 98 times where the answer to “how to have eternal life” is given, and it's given in one word -- “Believe.” This is the word. It means “to trust.”
The power is not in how strong your faith is. People say, I just don't have strong enough faith. It's not how strong your faith is. It's how strong the object of your faith is. If your faith is in Jesus Christ, who is omnipotent God, your faith is strong enough! And it's in that context that Jesus now says, “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, so that whoever BELIEVES in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
